STAR TREK: THE MOTION

Cargo
Bay
Thoughts on the new
Enterprise cargo decks were already visualized by Star Trek veteran,
Mike Minor,
before I had a chance to address it. He was working on the Paramount
lot while I was at the
Robert Abel (Special Effects) facility designing various pieces of
space hardware.
The thinking, then at
Paramount under production designer Harold Michelson, was that the
cargo bay would
be a space 30 feet high (plus) that had two (presumably) walls with
twelve holes containing cargo pods (?).
These 'Matte
Renderings', by Mike Minor, showed us that any additional cargo pods
were simply stacked
or lined up on the deck like some 20th century warehouse leaving a huge
open and unused space above (?).
The walkways along the sides were also rather old fashoned looking.
As I began my talks
about this, with newly appointed Effects Supervisor, Douglas Trumbull,
things went terribly wrong when a consulting illustrator produced
this verry scarry version
featuring a space that was now over 50 feet high with a HUGE WINDOW
( ? )
on one side of a straight-sided hull, uuuuuugh.
